Local Portland Family Crafts Protective Face Shields for Medical Workers
Dated: April 28 2020
In the story below about the Cha family of West Linn, we showcase how one family responded to the Covid-19 crisis by creating protective masks for frontline responders. When our family heard about this from a past client, Jenni Tan, we covered our ping-pong table in the garage with moving blankets and assembled masks on three separate occasions.
To date, the Cha family and other volunteers have made nearly 1,500 of these and we still hope to do more. That's probably a drop in the bucket given the scale of the crisis, but we've got to take care of each other right now and believe every little bit helps. After listening to his wife, an internal medicine physician, and other family and friends working in healthcare talk about the desperate need for personal protective equipment (PPE) gripping hospitals across the country, Eric Cha of West Linn realized he could help.
On March 18, her husband Eric, an engineer and computer programmer, had the idea to start creating protective face shields for medical workers on his own, according to his wife, Stephanie Cha. The Chas have lived in West Linn for about 15 years and have two kids who attend West Linn High School.
